Attributes of Management Excellence by Tom Peters and Bob Waterman
Tom Peters and Bob Waterman explained the eight management attributes for excellence as been explained in the policy and classic of management titled “In Search of Excellence”.
These are described in detail below.
i. Simple form, lean staff2. Hands-on, Value-driven
ii. Stick to the Knitting
iii. Productivity through People
iv. Close to the Customer
v. Autonomy and Entrepreneurship
vi. A Bias for Action
vii. Simultaneous loose-tight properties
The last attribute that is simultaneous loose tight properties is a detailed summary of the rest of the attributes. It incorporates every attribute so well that it describes the summary of the rest. The coexistence of strongly dedicated central direction and individual maximum independent autonomy is in the presence of Simultaneous loose- tight properties.
The organizations which are dependent on the simultaneous loose-tight principle are more rigidly controlled, and also simultaneously at the same time they allow autonomy, i.e they are dependent on autonomy, innovation, development, sustainability and entrepreneurship from the profile, rank and file.
There are different management models and other management related theories which shape the market in a way we think, control, manage and run the organizations.
Management models are like a tool which help in developing an understanding or some common attributes or language that helps in better interaction. These management models are not a solution in themselves. One should always remember that these management models are just tools only these are the simplification view of reality model in the given relation. Nobody knows when these tools come and go. These tools are like fashion.
While we list a great many here, please ensure you research any tool or model prior to applying it in your organization. Such tools are very precious and valuable tools. A model should be used only when it suits the situation and is appropriate to the situation. These models just represent the concept. Most of the time the realistic situations are much more complex and these situations demand and involve many more attributes, features and dimensions than an ordinary simple model.
