How to Fire People in a Nice Way
Working as the president of a company means a lot of responsibility. One of the most important responsibilities as the big boss is firing people. Donald Trump has developed his own unique business style and way of firing employees that aren’t living up to his lofty standards. Firing someone like Donald Trump takes intelligence, attitude and style.
- Be decisive. Once he’s made the decision to fire someone, Donald Trump never changes his mind. No matter how much crying or pleading takes place in the boardroom, he stays firm in his decision. Second chances don’t get business done or make money, so make your decision and stick to it.
- Utilize trusted advisors. Donald Trump relies on a chosen few trusted employees, one of whom is his own daughter, to help him oversee his businesses and give him input about employee performance. The final decision is up to him, but these advisors are often the eyes and ears that keep him informed about what’s going on. Choose a few senior employees that you trust and whose opinions you value to help you with hiring and firing decisions.
- Listen to all parties involved. When he fires someone on his television show, Donald Trump always gives them the chance to defend their performance and justify why they shouldn’t be fired. Giving employees the opportunity to speak their mind and explain poor performance will make you look fair and diplomatic.
- Keep them in suspense. Donald Trump takes his time before he drops the axe and fires someone. Give employees a little time to think about their performance and wonder if they’re the one getting fired. The employee that gets terminated will understand why they’re out of a job, and the others will be relieved to stay.
- Do it with style. From his catchphrase, “You’re fired!” to that signature hair-do, Donald Trump does everything with a unique style, even firing people. Don’t get ruffled or flustered when you fire someone. Stay cool and collected and remember that you’re the boss.
