Management Duties in Todays Economy
Management is a very well payed job in todays capitalism. But very few know what management actually does, what are management duties, what is an every day of a manager like. We I’ve worked in many companies by now, know many managers and I will try to present you the profession of a manager.
First of all, let me say that there is no such thing as an average day in management. Management duties are very wide spread and cannot be tought from a text book. Many great economists have studied the management duties or management roles as Mintzberg have called them. We might devide management duties by four basic functions of management.
The first one is planning and this one takes a lot of skills to do well. Management duty is to plan everything that happens in company the manage a.k.a. work for. If the management is good, then everything that happens in the company has been planned before. Nothing should surprise the management, that is their duty.
Then the second management function is organising. It is very important, that management knows how to organise everything in order to achieve what they have planned. Many skills are important here and it is the duty of management, to make sure nothing is missing, before the company steps on the path to their goal.
Directing is also a very important thing and is also a place where managers and leader are confused. Manager has a job, to achieve the goal no matter what, while the leader puts people in mind as well. Of course a very good manager is ussually also a leader, but it is a duty of management to put company before people.
The last function of four is controlling. This is also a very important duty of management. Controlling of their employees. Not an easy job though. Of course management also have to control everything else, the death lines and stuff like that. They need to make sure they have achieved the goal they have set in the first function, when their duty was to plan everything out. If they did not manage to achieve that, they need to fix stuff or learn for next time in case fixing is not an option.
