Parenting Styles by Michael Goold and Andrew Campbell

The parenting styles theory was introduced by Michael Goold and Andrew Campbell and is basically a model representing the part of corporate centre in the corporation. According to Goold and Campbell, depending upon the management styles, there are several successful methods to this corporate strategy. The prime determining factors lay on the approaches focusing on influence control exhibited by centre and its influence on the business. There are three generic conventions specified, which companies follow up. As a matter of fact, all these styles vary in approach and render advantages to its corporation, though, differ in terms of strengths and weaknesses.

The three styles of generic parenting defined by Goold and Campbell are:

  1. Financial control: the strategic philosophy used in this parenting style is portfolio. The role of corporate center is to provide a better investment performance. Financial control covers those activities that have an important impact on financial position such as performance indicators, the administrative budget, information and management systems and performance indicators. There is less detail level information of the corporate center. There are many diverse typical businesses.
  2. Strategic control: the strategic philosophy used is linkages. For this parenting style, the corporate center coordinates and reviews strategy. It set fairly tight financial and strategic targets and also attempts to create links between businesses to create competitive advantage. There is moderate detail level information of the corporate center. Strategic control in general focuses on the dual questions of whether: the strategy is being implemented as planned and the results that are produced by the strategy are those intended. The SBU’s largely develop strategy but coordinated by center.
  3. Strategic planning: the strategic philosophy is core competence. The responsibility of corporate center is to strongly coordinate actions and create linkages between units. The detail level of information for this parenting style is high. The SBU’s concentrate on implementation and assist with strategy.
