Root Cause Analysis


Root cause analysis is a problem solving method for identifying the root causes of problem. Behind any problem, there is a root cause which needs to be eliminated so as to solve it effectively. The immediate noticeable and apparent symptoms when addressed will not do much in solving the difficulty while when curative measure are applied at the root causes the problems can be solved. This method helps to minimize the likelihood of problem recurrence. RCA is considered to be an iterative process that is often viewed as the tool for continuous improvement. Root Cause is that factor of a problem which when fixed, the problem goes away. This method is initially a reactive method of detecting and solving the problem which means that the analysis is done after an incident has occurred.

If an unwanted situation occurs frequently that consumes a lot of resources and work, then it is important for us to remove that but to find the real cause of that problem is really very challenging. There are certain questions that must be answered to perform the Root Cause Analysis. The questions are:

  • How to determine which situations are essential for this method of root cause analysis?

  • How to figure out what is the root cause?

  • The elimination of the root cause requires less expenditure or the elimination of symptoms?

This technique of root cause analysis is often used in environments that are critical. It can be applied in the situations where there is a gap between the desired and actual performance. It provides information on how to change and what to change within the business or the system processes. The industries that use root cause analysis are construction, chemical, healthcare, transportation, petroleum and power generation. RCA is not a sharply and harshly defined methodology. There are various tools and processes which can be applied for this method.
