Why Does it Sometimes Take so Long to Pay With Credit Card?

Have you ever been to store and paid with you credit card? I guess everyone has… It usually takes few seconds to finish the transaction and that is no big deal. It is actually faster than to give money, get it back and count it… But sometimes, paying with credit card can take a lot of time. Why is that? Where is the catch? Answer lays in credit card processing. In this article, I will try to explain why is credit card processing sometime so time consuming.

To understand the problem, let’s first take a look at what happens when we give the credit card to the worker in the store. He/She inserts the credit card into credit card processing machine. It depends on the machine but after some form of authorization, the machine connects to the central where huge servers are, that then proccess your request. Usually that happens very fast, so we don’t even notice it. BUT, in the rush hour, like just before stores stop working or right after people come from work, this servers get overloaded.

Once the server cannot manage all the requests, a waiting line happens. So when you send a request with your credit card from a local store, your request waits in a line for server to have enough place to process your request and return positive or negative repsonse.

It all depends on the credit card processing service. So make sure you select the right one for your business. I’ve linked one on the top of this article which I believe is a good one. Take a look at few of them and select the best one.
